San Fernando Hill

San Fernando can be located on our map of Trinidad. You can find a zoom-able version of the picture shown above on this page.

San Fernando hill was recognised as an important landmark by the Amerindians of Trinidad. It was named "Annaparima" Hill by the Amerindians which, loosely translated, means "Without Water" or "Single Hill". A very good historical account of the hill can be found here. It is situated at the centre of the city of San Fernando and rises to a height of 191 meters. The hill is unique in that it is derived from a single protrusion of cretaceous rock, in the middle of a plain. It has become a popular spot for recreation and for the view it offers of the Naparima plain to the North.

The San Fernando hill has been reduced to almost two-thirds of its original size by quarrying. This practise was halted in 1977 after pressure was brought to bear on the government. The hill was then converted to a National Landmark site. Further rehabilitation of the hill was actively pursued in 1988, and a roadway leading to the summit was constructed. A visitor centre is located on the summit.
