Our Responsibilities to the Planet

While the rest of the world digests the sobering scientific facts about global warming, marine life collapse by the year 2048, and other environmental issues of dire consequence, we are on the verge of building aluminium smelters. While the rest of the world scrambles to cut carbon dioxide emissions to save the planet from a point of no return (estimated to be within a DECADE from now), we are proud to be the country with the highest per capita index of cars on the planet. While the rest of the world races to find greener sources of sustainable energy, we boast about how much natural gas and electricity we consume. While the 2006 United Nations Development Report cites a potable water scarcity as one of the world's most pressing problems, we aim to pump millions of cubic metres of water PER DAY to industries in the southwest peninsula. The litany of stupidity is endless. Are we really so insular in our thinking? Are we so blind to the bigger picture that we just can't see beyond our pot of curry-duck? Apparently, we are. We will all learn the hard way that environmental catastrophe is not insular in its effects.
